Australia is famous for having unique and different types of animals. Most people when visiting Australia put it in their holiday plan as a priority to see some of these beautiful native animals, and if you are coming to Cairns you should do the same. The Far North Queensland region has some interesting animals and you should take the time to appreciate and see some of these extraordinary Australian creatures.

#1 – The Saltwater Crocodile

Saltwater Crocodiles is the number one animal you must see while visiting Cairns. The population of crocs in Far North Queensland is quite large but even though they can be quite scary animals they are also beautiful creatures.

Crocs are the largest living reptiles on earth and males can reach 6.3 metres in length. Because of their size and very powerful jaws they can kill almost anything including sharks, big mammals including of course human beings. But if you can admire these animals from a safe position, why not do so.

There are several animal parks around Cairns that offers an amazing experience while you have a close and safe encounter with these beautiful Saltwater Crocodiles. One of them is Hartley's Crocodile Adventures, At Hartley's get you to see crocs really close in their natural habitat, their river cruise makes you feel that you are in the wild surrounded by many crocs. Also, they have a great croc show, the Crocodile Attack show, which they bring a croc to an arena and an experienced guide gives a talk about interesting facts about this historical animal.

#2 – The Cassowary

Cassowaries live in wet tropical rainforests, lowland and highland dense forests. Because of the life in deep forests, this bird is rarely seen in the wild. They are the third tallest and second heaviest bird in the world and they mainly eat fruit. If you encounter one of them in the wild you should stay away as they are considered dangerous. They can use their feet as weapons as they have long and powerful claws.

Cassowaries like crocodiles are amazing animals and it is believed that they have some kind of connection to the dinosaurs. Tourists visiting Cairns should take the time to see one of these weird and amazing creatures and learn a bit more about them. There are several animal parks around the Cairns region that you can closely see and admire this animal.

#3 – The Koala

You cant visit Cairns without holding and taking a photo with one of these cute creatures. Koalas are beautiful animals and it is so easy to fall in love with them. Their are lots of interesting facts about Koalas, one of them is that they drink very little water as most of their water comes from the leaves they eat. Koala actually means "without water" in the Aboriginal language. They sleep around 18 hours a day and this is because of their low nutrient diet. Another interesting fact about Koalas is that they are great swimmers being able to cross a river with no problems at all.

There are several places where you can see, hold and take a photo with this amazing animal. Don't miss out on this opportunity before you leave Cairns, it will be a photo that you will keep forever together with great memories.

#4 – The Kangaroo

Who doesn't think about a Kangaroo when they think about an native Australian animal. Kangaroos are so unique and different from any other animal and I am sure anyone coming from outside Australia wants to see one.

The kangaroo is the largest marsupial and can grow up to 2 metres. They are the only large animal to use hopping as their primary method of motion. Did you know that Kangaroos cant jump backwards? this is because of their thick, muscular tail. And believe it or not there are more kangaroos than people in Australia.

People love feeding them as they are quite gentle animals. There are several animal parks in Cairns that allow you enter their enclosure, pat and also feed them. It is an amazing experience and a great activity to do with kids.
