Can't decide between Green Island and Fitzroy Island? Which one is the best island to travel to?

Tourism Cairns has put together the top differences between both islands. Check it out below.

Green Island:

Green Island is located 50 minutes from Cairns by boat and there are several departure times along day to travel to the island so visitors can spend a full day or half day on the island.

Green Island is much smaller, it is only 15 hectares in size. You can actually walk around the whole island and it will take only1 hour.

Green Island beaches are sandy so it is quite nice and comfortable to walk along the beach, sit down and relax. The sand is very white and the ocean crystal clear making this beautiful scenery. It looks like a paradise beach.

The reef around the island is not considered to be great but Green Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

There is a rainforest on the island and some walking tracks to enjoy. Because of the size of the island the tracks are short but very enjoyable.

There is also a resort on the island with a swimming pool so visitors can stay overnight If they want to. There is also a cafe/restaurant that sells food and drinks all day.

On Green Island visitors can enjoy many activities such as snorkelling, glass bottom boat tour, semi-submersible, scuba diving, helmet diving, stand up paddle boards, paddle skis and helicopter flights (not available on Fitzroy Island).

Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is a much bigger island, it is about 339 hectares. The island has steep mountains and it is covered with rainforest. There are many hiking tracks around the island. The most popular ones are to the summit (highest point of the island), to the lighthouse and to Nudey beach. Hikers love the island.

The beaches around the island are very pretty but have lots of dead corals so they are not sandy like the ones on Green Island. Nudey beach, another beach located about 20 minutes by walk from the jetty, is one of the locations where there is a bit more sand and less coral on the beach.

In regards to reef quality, Fitzroy island has a better reputation for having a better reef than Green Island. People report to see more corals and sea life around Fitzroy Island. One of people's favourite spots to snorkel is just off Nudey Beach.

At Fitzroy Island there is a big resort that offers many different types of rooms, from studio rooms to beachfront cabins. The resort prices seem to be more affordable at Fitzroy Island If compared to Green Island Resort.

There is also a beach front bar/restaurant on the island that serves a wide range of food and drinks all day. Some people travel to Fitzroy Island just to relax at the bar and enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean. Great place to spend the day.

The activities available on Fitzroy Island are similar to Green Island. The activities are: snorkelling, glass bottom boat tour, semi-submersible, scuba diving, stand up paddle boards and paddle skis.

Just like Green Island, visitors can travel to Fitzroy Island for a full day or a half day with several departure times available daily.
