Why you should do Kuranda Tour (Train and Skyrail)

Cairns has so much to offer when it comes to tours and activities. There are a wide range of activities including tours to the great barrier reef, rainforest tours, adventure tours, helicopter tours and much more. This can be very overwhelming for some people and it can also be very confusing. So what tour should you do?

Kuranda is the most popular tour in Cairns, after the great barrier reef, with hundreds of tourists visiting Kuranda every day. This tour is highly recommended for anyone visiting Cairns, including families with kids, backpackers and elderly people.

So what is Kuranda? Kuranda is a mountain village located 25 km northwest of Cairns. Kuranda is famous for its market and wildlife parks located in the area. Everyday tourists can find stalls selling aboriginal arts, souvenirs, local produce and much more. There are also wildlife parks such as Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld Kuranda, Koala Gardens and The Rainforestation.

What is the best way to get to Kuranda? There are a few different ways to get to Kuranda Village, by coach or car, by the famous skyrail or by train. The most popular way and the most recommended is going up to Kuranda by train and coming back down to Cairns by skyrail (or vice versa). This way visitors get to experience both ways of transport.

The train departs twice daily at 8:50am and 9:50am from Freshwater Station and departs Kuranda at 2:30pm or 3:30pm. The skyrail departs constantly every 10 min from 9am until 4pm daily.

Visitors can spend a little as 1 hour in Kuranda or spend up to 4 hours at the village. The exact time can be arranged with their travel consultant at the time of booking. Also pick up and drop off from hotels are available.

The skyrail gives travellers an amazing view of the rainforest from the top. The gondola travels above the rainforest for a total of 45 min. Along the way to Kuranda there are two stops, one at the Red Peak Station where visitors can experience a guided boardwalk through the rainforest and learn about the plants and animals in the area. Also enjoy a beautiful scenic lookout.

The second stop is at the Barron Falls Station where visitors enjoy great sceneries of the Barron River and rainforest around. Visitors usually spend about 20 minutes in each station so the whole skyrail experience is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The train ride usually takes the same amount of time as the skyrail, 1 hour and 30 minutes, including a 10min stop at Barron Falls lookout. Along the way travellers will also experience amazing views of the rainforest, Cairns city, mountains, waterfalls and even the ocean.

There is no doubt that Kuranda train and skyrail is a fantastic tour and a “must do” while visiting Cairns.
